Keeping Up with Taiwan
English-language sources, legit experts, and other fun ways to learn about Taiwan
I write this Substack partly to help my Taiwanese American friends and whoever else is interested to understand Taiwan a little bit better. Since Pelosi’s visit in Taiwan in 2022 and the ensuing pressure from China (military blockades are so fun), our country has been thrusted into the limelight, which brings with it a lot of terrible “hot takes” and carpetbagger “Taiwan experts.”
After some surveying of trusted friends and much, much procrastination, I’m compiled a list on my website titled: Keeping Up with Taiwan—a curated list of English-language sources I trust, from journalism and research to fact-checking, books, and culture. I even highlight a couple of my favorite Taiwanese comics—not Atsuko Okatsuka (did you not know she’s half Taiwanese? Shame) and Jenny Yang because they’re already pretty darn famous.
This post is my attempt at an answer—a curated, regularly updated list of English-language sources I trust, from journalism and research to fact-checking, books, and culture.
If you’re trying to understand Taiwan without falling for click-bait, I hope this helps. Message me if you have any recommendations or requests!
