More Shows! Cat & Mouse and Wang's World Comedy
A cat-themed show? Does it get any more Vickie than this?
I’m biased. I’ll admit it. An all-female show just hits different. As an art form, stand-up is still quite male-dominated. The first time I was part of an all-female show, it dawned on me, “oh, this is why men love comedy so much. This is where you share your secret thoughts and have them validated!”
That hadn’t been my experience doing stand-up comedy. As a not-white-male, or not the default, one of the first things I was taught is to “address the elephant in the room.” You have to make yourself legible to the audience, explain yourself and put the audience at ease before you can move on to the jokes. Otherwise, your accent, your size, your gender, anything that’s not default, may distract the audience from listening to your jokes.
So an all-female show is an opportunity for female+ comedians and audience members to experience some of that home court advantage. I’ll be hosting!
